Deke Slayton Patch

Designed exclusively for the Deke Slayton Memorial Space & Bicycle Museum by patch artist Tim Gagnon.

Description of symbols:

• The shape honors Deke’s service in the Army Air Corps and Air Force. 
• The 7 rays of the sun honor the original Mercury 7 astronauts.
• The 12 stars honor the 12 men selected by Deke to walk on the moon, while the full moon represents that goal of the Apollo program.
• The central focus is the Apollo and Soyuz spacecrafts docked together while orbiting the Earth.
• Underneath is the Delta 7 symbol, designed by artist Bill Coukoulis and used with his permission, which would have been painted on Deke’s Mercury spacecraft.
• Flying from behind the Delta 7 symbol is his Formula 1 racing plane, the Stinger.
• Along the bottom are the symbols of the programs he helped manage: Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Skylab, Shuttle, and finally Space Services Inc. In the center is the special diamond astronaut pin the wives of the Apollo 1 crew gave him.
